Held by Jordan and Egypt, 1949–67
After the 1948 war, Jordan held the West Bank and East Jerusalem and annexed them in 1950. Egypt ran Gaza under military rule. For 19 years every square kilometer of today's “occupied territories” was in Arab hands.
No Palestinian state was created. Egypt hosted a nominal All-Palestine Government in Gaza that had no real power and was dissolved in 1959. The PLO, founded in 1964, explicitly disclaimed sovereignty over the West Bank and Gaza in its charter. Its goal was the land inside Israel.
Israel captured these territories in the 1967 war.
