History
- 1947The UN plan put all of Jerusalem under international administration (a corpus separatum), not in either state.
- 1948–67Held by Jordan. Jews were expelled from the Old City's Jewish Quarter and could not visit the Western Wall.
- 1967Captured by Israel, which extended Israeli law to it and enlarged the city's borders.
- 1980Israel's Jerusalem Law declared the “complete and united” city its capital. UN Security Council Resolution 478 called the move null and void.
- 2017The US recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and moved its embassy there in 2018.
Today
Most Palestinian residents hold Israeli residency but not citizenship. Palestinians claim East Jerusalem as their capital. For many Jews, Muslims and Christians it is the least negotiable ground in the conflict.
