The 1947 UN Partition Plan
UN General Assembly Resolution 181 split Mandate Palestine into a Jewish state (about 56% of the land, much of it the Negev desert) and an Arab state (about 43%), with Jerusalem under international rule.
The Jewish Agency accepted. The Arab Higher Committee and the Arab states rejected it, and war followed. By 1949 Israel held more than the plan had given it, and Jordan and Egypt held the rest.
Roughly drawn: the real Arab state also included Jaffa, a wider Gaza Strip reaching toward Beersheba, and land along the Egyptian border.
