History

  1. 1947The UN plan split it: Western Galilee (including Nazareth and Akko) went to the Arab state and Eastern Galilee to the Jewish state.
  2. 1948Israel captured the whole region. Many Arab villages were emptied during the fighting, while others, including Nazareth, stayed. Their residents became Arab citizens of Israel.
  3. 1949The armistice with Lebanon and Syria set the northern border.
  4. 2006, 2023–24Wars with Hezbollah emptied towns along the border for long periods.

Today

It has been part of Israel since 1948 and is not claimed by the Palestinian Authority. More than half of its residents are Arab citizens of Israel, who vote and sit in the Knesset.
