History
- 1909Tel Aviv was founded on sand dunes outside Jaffa.
- 1947The UN plan assigned it to the Jewish state, except for Jaffa, an Arab enclave.
- 1948Israel declared independence in Tel Aviv. Most of Jaffa's roughly 70,000 Arab residents fled or were expelled during the fighting, as were those of Haifa and Lydda.
- 1948–todayIt grew into a metropolis through immigration of Holocaust survivors, Jews from across the Middle East and North Africa, and Jews from the former Soviet Union and Ethiopia.
Today
About half of Israel's population lives here. It was never part of any proposed Palestinian state, including the 1947 Partition Plan.
