History with Israel

1. 1948Joined the Arab invasion. A 1949 armistice followed.
2. 1970sAfter Black September the PLO moved its base to Lebanon and attacked northern Israel.
3. 1982Israel invaded to drive the PLO out of Beirut. A Lebanese Christian militia allied with Israel massacred hundreds of Palestinians at Sabra and Shatila. An Israeli inquiry found Israel indirectly responsible. A 1983 peace agreement was cancelled by Lebanon a year later under Syrian pressure.
4. 2000Land without peace. Israel withdrew from southern Lebanon to the UN-certified border, with no deal. Hezbollah kept its weapons.
5. 2006War with Hezbollah after a cross-border raid.
6. 2022A US-brokered deal fixed the sea border, opening offshore gas fields for both countries.
7. 2023–24Hezbollah began firing on Israel the day after 7 October. Israel's 2024 campaign killed its leader, Hassan Nasrallah. A ceasefire began in November 2024.
