Egypt and Israel
Peace treaty since 1979
History with Israel
- 1948Invaded the new State of Israel. Held Gaza until 1967.
- 1956Suez Crisis: Israel took Sinai, then withdrew under US pressure.
- 1967–73Lost Sinai and Gaza in the Six-Day War. Launched the 1973 Yom Kippur War with Syria to win them back.
- 1979Land for peace. After Sadat's 1977 visit to Jerusalem and the Camp David Accords, Israel handed back all of Sinai by 1982, about three times Israel's own size, removing its settlements and giving up the oil fields it had developed there. Egypt became the first Arab country to recognize Israel. Sadat was assassinated in 1981, partly for it. Egypt did not ask for Gaza back.
